Joshua 1: 1-9

Joshua

God’s Commission to Joshua

1After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying, 2‘My servant Moses is dead. Now proceed to cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the Israelites. 3Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, as I promised to Moses. 4From the wilderness and the Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, to the Great Sea in the west shall be your territory. 5No one shall be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you. 6Be strong and courageous; for you shall put this people in possession of the land that I swore to their ancestors to give them. 7Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to act in accordance with all the law that my servant Moses commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, so that you may be successful wherever you go. 8This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful. 9I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.’

Psalm 40

1  I waited patiently for the Lord; ♦︎
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2  He brought me out of the roaring pit,
out of the mire and clay; ♦︎
he set my feet upon a rock and made my footing sure.
3  He has put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God; ♦︎
   many shall see and fear
and put their trust in the Lord.
4  Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, ♦︎
who does not turn to the proud that follow a lie.
5  Great are the wonders you have done, O Lord my God.
How great your designs for us! ♦︎
There is none that can be compared with you.
6  If I were to proclaim them and tell of them ♦︎
they would be more than I am able to express.
7  Sacrifice and offering you do not desire ♦︎
   but my ears you have opened;
8  Burnt offering and sacrifice for sin you have not required; ♦︎
then said I: ‘Lo, I come.
9  ‘In the scroll of the book it is written of me
that I should do your will, O my God; ♦︎
I delight to do it: your law is within my heart.’
10  I have declared your righteousness in the great congregation; ♦︎
behold, I did not restrain my lips,
and that, O Lord, you know.
11  Your righteousness I have not hidden in my heart;
I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; ♦︎
I have not concealed your loving-kindness and truth
      from the great congregation.
12  Do not withhold your compassion from me, O Lord; ♦︎
let your love and your faithfulness always preserve me,
13  For innumerable troubles have come about me;
my sins have overtaken me so that I cannot look up; ♦︎
they are more in number than the hairs of my head,
      and my heart fails me.
14  Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me; ♦︎
O Lord, make haste to help me.
15  Let them be ashamed and altogether dismayed
who seek after my life to destroy it; ♦︎
let them be driven back and put to shame
      who wish me evil.
16  Let those who heap insults upon me ♦︎
be desolate because of their shame.
17  Let all who seek you rejoice in you and be glad; ♦︎
let those who love your salvation say always,
      ‘The Lord is great.’
18  Though I am poor and needy, ♦︎
   the Lord cares for me.
19  You are my helper and my deliverer; ♦︎
O my God, make no delay.

Ephesians 6: 10-20

The Whole Armour of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. 11Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For our* struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13Therefore take up the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. 15As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. 16With all of these,* take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. 19Pray also for me, so that when I speak, a message may be given to me to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel,* 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it boldly, as I must speak.

John 2: 13-22

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. 15Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’ 17His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’ 18The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ 19Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ 20The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ 21But he was speaking of the temple of his body. 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
